In the mind of Donald J Trump

In the mind of Donald J Trump. The events of last few weeks have highlighted what we have always suspected about President Trump’s policies.

Whether it was trade, immigration or health, the ultimate goal was not the interest of the citizen but the desire to enlarge the circle of his supporters and enhance his chances for re-election. The debacle in the Coronavirus handling so vividly evocated in the vice-presidential debate, best illustrates the communication methodology of this POTUS.

At some time, the SARS-2  coronavirus, the now known  Trump dubbed “China virus”, emerged and in spite of many conspiracy theories as to its accidental or planned release from a lab, the consensus is that it came from animal source.

Although the circumstances of the unusual pneumonia cases that became apparent in the last days and early days were covered up by the local communist party officials who feared panic and disorder and their own fear of reprimand. But soon the news filtered to the highest echelons of the party and Wuhan and Hebei were put on a total lock down isolation from the rest of China This gave the Government time and resources to limit the spread by rigorous identifying tracing and isolating the few cases that had been transmitted from persons travelling from the devasted province

On December 31, 2019, the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) China office heard the first reports of a previously unknown virus behind several pneumonia cases.  On 9TH of JANUARY, China CDC publicly shared the gene sequence of the coronavirus COVID- 19 By the 21st January, videos from Chinese social media were circulating in the West, showing people out of breath collapsing in the street. It was in the public domain that the Sars-Cov-2 was a very dangerous newcomer in the coronavirus world. Worldwide, scientists in labs started analyzing the virus genome sequence in the quest of vaccines and other therapeutics.

On January 28th of this year, before the virus was on anyone’s radar, the national security advisor, Robert O’Brien, told the president, “This virus will be the biggest national security threat you face in your presidency.

Trade Adviser Peter Navarro Warned on January 29th White House in January of Risks of a Covid Pandemic projecting in the worse case 500,000 deaths.

On Friday January 31st, Trump decreed a ban on all flights from China effective midnight 2nd February with exception for US Citizen, their children, and some others. Although Trump later bragged, he acted contrary to his advisers, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, stated that the whole cabinet had concurred for such a move.

The Dow Jones was hovering at the 28,000 mark 30% up on the year before. We now know from the recorded interviews with Bob Woodward, Trump was well aware of the extremely dangerous features  of the virus and  was anxious not to do anything that could derail his stock market performance approval ratings.

It would be at the very end of the month on Feb. 29, that the authorities would announce the first death of a Covid-19 patient near Seattle. At the time there had been only 68 cases in the US and 7 had already recovered.

In early March, , due to Trump’s refusal to disembark 21 Covid-19 positive passenger and crew members from the Grand Princess, the cruise ship hanged in limbo  for several days  off  the San Francisco Bay until he finally gave in.

“I like the numbers being where they are. I don’t need to have the numbers double because of one ship”

Did he realise that since the 29th of February, the day after he had prophesised:

“It’s going to disappear. One day, it’s like a miracle, it will disappear”

the active cases had, in just a week, more than quadrupled from 60 to 289?

The following week was to prove even more dramatic. By the 13th of March the active cases had reached 2126, a multiple of more than 7. On that day, he declared a national emergency making $50 billion in federal funds available to states and territories to combat the coronavirus. He had just said on the 10th of March:

“And we are prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it.

And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.”

He further set up a travel ban from Europe effective 14th March 0400 GMT. It was too late. A week later the cases had reached 19,092 and by the 27th of March over 100,000 The genie was out of the lamp. A week later on the 3rd of April about 250,000 cases were announced. The US had the highest figures of active cases in the world. Two third of those cases were on the Eastern Seaboard and in the West Coast States, which were democratic states.

As the cases in the East coast dwindled,  as illustrated by NY the largest affected state from the  10,000 rate during April to the 6-700 range, the President Trump quipped  on the 17th of June:

” The pandemic is fading away. It’s going to fade away.”

But the cases in the US had only decreased in the Eastern Seaboard states now about 12% of total daily infection representing only while the cases were increasing in the rest of the US that had been relatively spared by the epidemic. Little did he imagine that, within the next month, the infection would be double of the worst days in the spring wave, but this time the virus was spreading in Red States.

Even ignoring  his persistent lies, an entire book could be written narrating his quotes expletives and derogatory comments but the few mentioned above illustrate his approach of a showman that puts himself forward  by exaggerating, deforming or even masking the truth like a magician on the scene distracts the audience to achieve his trick. However, unlike a magician, Trump rarely rehearses his tricks believing in divine inspiration. When it works, he is elated but when he meets opposition, his anger mounts. He believes in his infallible judgement. We shall never forget Hydroxychloroquine, Dettol, or the ultraviolet endoscope!

As we approached the election Supreme court Justice Ruth Ginsburg died and 2 days later, he engaged the crowds in one his narcissistic rallies. In one of his harangues, he ranted in Dayton (Ohio):

“It affects elderly people. Elderly people with heart problems and other problems. If they have other problems that’s what it really affects, that’s it.

You know in some states, thousands of people – nobody young.”

Eager to please his conservative supporters he selected a catholic ultra conservative circuit judge with the aim of having her confirmed by the Senate before the election. In his usual mediatic knack, he organised a huge reception at the White House Rose Garden to present her to his courtiers. Predictably, hardly any one wore a mask. Whether by coincidence or because it was a super-spreader event, a substantial number of people present became infected.

Less than a week later, the President and his wife were tested positive for Covid-19, just over 24 hours after a close aide, Hope Hicks, had become herself positive the day before (September 30th). Much discussion is going on as to when he actually became infected and by whom. This would be a normal procedure in order to trace and identify all people that came in direct contact with the President or the infector. The White House refuses to answer.

This default locally implies  that either the President was not sufficiently regularly tested or more likely that he refused to be tested on after his assistant was found to be infected,  so that he could attend on Thursday a rally and a fund raiser event before it was announced that he was positive during Thursday night.

We then witnessed the emergency visit to Walter Reed hospital, and the various attempts to present an almost normal President capable of working. No doubt, the President was giving orders and not the doctors. He probably told them:

“give me the strongest, latest magic bullet drug that is about to emerge and get me out of here quick!

I need to get back on the campaign trail tomorrow! Tomorrow I mean that!

Not going into details, he was given with a high dose of a not completely tested but promising monoclonal antibody treatment developed by Regeneron. Shortly after, he was given an antiviral drug “remdesivir” and a steroid cortisone like called dexamethasone. What the doctors tried to achieve was to accelerate the recovery by replacing a longer immune response by a short and intense therapeutic one, a very novel attempt. The steroids at the end were meant to cut inflammation and avoid a cytokine storm. Whether this approach has been partially or completely successful is a mystery as his medical condition is enrobed in a fog of secrecy.

What is apparent is that his natural “rage” proclivity has intensified to the point that he zigs zags between opposite directions none of which is helping his re-election ambitions. Notwithstanding his decision to scrap the additional stimulus on the base that democrat citizen would profit more than republicans, his ascribing of the attribute “monster” to Kamala Harris is more likely to cost him votes than the reverse.

Look forward to further insane ranting in the next three weeks!
